Licensed Access Clients

The advantage of Licensed Access is that your choice of barristers is not limited to those who have undertaken 'Public Access' training; only about 1000 out of over 13,000 barristers have so far been trained, although that number is steadily increasing. Any barrister can accept instructions from a person covered by the Licensed Access scheme.

Many non-lawyers are in fact already covered by the Licensed Access scheme including accountants, actuaries, engineers and architects. For a check list of organisations whose members are covered by the scheme click here.

Becoming a Licensed Access user is relatively straightforward, involving a simple application form submitted to the Bar Standards Board - for more information about Licensed Access provided by the Bar Standards Board click here.

Direct access to barristers is an idea whose time has come. It cuts confusion, it can provide quick answers, and is often much cheaper than using solicitors. Direct access has the prime advantage of simplicity and affordability. John Flood Professor of Law and Sociology, University of Westminster
